Moving to Perth?

There are so many reasons to move to Perth and the mining boom of recent years has seen interstate relocations to Perth from Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane fly off the charts. One in three people living in Western Australia was born overseas, the highest proportion of any area in Australia. When you take into account those moving to WA from other parts of Australia, virtually every other person was born somewhere else. So what is it that attracts out-of-towners to Perth? The number one reason is undoubtably work - the FIFO industry entices many people to make the move west - one in five Western Australians are tradies compared to one in ten in other states. But Perth has so much more to offer than what many may imagine - the commonly held preconception of a big country town is no longer accurate - today visitors and new arrivals find themselves in a cosmopolitan city, that has no shortage of culture, natural beauty and places of interest. To that end, and with summer on the way, I have compiled a top ten list of my favourite things to do in the warmer months in my favourite Australian city - Perth!

  1. Kings Park - one of the largest inner city parks in the world - the park is a mixture of grassed parkland, botanical gardens and natural bushland - with stunning views of the city and the Swan river.

  2. Cottesloe Beach - there are numerous beautiful beaches to visit in Perth but Cottesloe is the original - there is no better place to view an Indian ocean sunset than here.

  3. Fremantle Markets - over 150 shops with plenty of hand crafts, food, fashion and more. It’s a Fremantle institution.

  4. Rooftop Movies - Make the most of a balmy summer night in Perth, a retro fit out and current and classic movie selection make this a cool and quirky night out in the heart of Northbridge.

  5. Hillarys Boat Harbour - Set in the northern suburbs, Hillarys is a marina with beaches, restaurants, shopping, pubs, waterslides, AQWA (aquarium) and fair ground rides. Perfect for a family day out.

  6. Rottnest Island - Known to the locals as Rotto - located 18km west of Fremantle, Rottnest feels like an island paradise a million miles from anywhere. Easily accessed by ferry, Rottnest is known for its unspoilt beaches and its population of quokkas - a small native marsupial found in very few other places.

  7. The Cultural Centre - Northbridge - While away an afternoon visiting the Art Gallery of WA, The WA Musuem, the state library and the State theatre. All situated in a leafy peaceful inner city spot easily navigated on foot.

  8. Whale Watching - Between September and December, take a boat to see whales on their annual migration - a truly memorable experience.

  9. Margaret River - a three hour drive south of Perth takes you to the Margaret River region - stunning natural scenery with wineries, beaches, gourmet delights and so much more.

  10. Paterson Stadium - Whether you follow AFL or not, a visit to Paterson Stadium to see the local teams - the Fremantle Dockers and the West Coast Eagles battle it out in the Subi Oval is not to be missed.
